Surfboard protection from ocean plastic
Salt Thread is a concept exploring how reclaimed ocean plastic can be transformed into durable, well-designed surfboard covers.
Developed as an extension of Forma Ordina’s approach to structure, material and restraint, the project considers how surf equipment might be rethought through a more considered, design-led lens.

THE IDEA
Surfboard covers are typically functional, often overlooked objects, designed for protection, but rarely with intention.
Salt Thread begins with a simple question:
What if these objects were treated with the same care as the boards they protect?
By using recycled ocean plastic as a primary material, the project aims to reduce waste while creating covers that feel calm, durable and quietly refined.
DESIGN APPROACH
The approach is intentionally restrained.
Each cover is designed to prioritise:
-
Clarity of form
-
Longevity of material
-
Subtle, integrated detail
Rather than applying bold graphics or branding, the surface becomes a place for quieter expression, often through soft, fashion-led illustrations that sit within the fabric rather than on top of it.
The intention is not decoration, but presence without noise.

MATERIAL DIRECTION
The concept centres on the use of recycled ocean plastic, reworked into a durable outer shell suitable for everyday surf use.
Key considerations include:
-
Recycled marine plastic fabrics
-
Lightweight protective padding
-
Corrosion-resistant components
-
Construction designed for long-term use
Material is treated not just as a sustainable choice, but as a design constraint.

PRODUCT LANGUAGE
The collection explores a small set of cover types, each with a slightly different expression:
-
A minimal, neutral cover focused on form and proportion
-
A panelled version that introduces subtle shifts in structure
-
A more technical variation, designed around durability and movement
Across all variations, the visual language remains consistent — calm, reduced, and quietly expressive.

A DIFFERENT KIND OF SURF OBJECT
Salt Thread is not intended to compete with traditional surf brands.
Instead, it sits slightly adjacent, closer to design, fashion, and considered objects.
It explores the possibility that surf equipment can be:
-
functional
-
responsible
-
and aesthetically intentional
all at once.

Salt Thread is currently a concept in development.
The project is open to future collaboration, production exploration, and material research.
